Dr Geoffrey Steadman has written an excellent series of commented texts: Plato, Herodotus, Homer... all of them following the same format: text, vocabulary help and additional help in the form of observations on grammatical points, difficult verbal forms, unusual constructions, etc. I really recommend them.
